Our Formation Process
At JOPASIT, formation is intentional, progressive, and transformative. From admission to graduation, each stage of the journey is designed to build knowledge, deepen spirituality, and prepare students for mission.
Admission & Orientation
Students begin with a guided admission process and orientation programme. This stage introduces them to the Institute’s mission, academic expectations, and spiritual life, helping them set clear personal and academic goals.
Doctrinal & Academic Formation
Through structured coursework in Sacred Scripture, Theology, Philosophy, and related disciplines, students receive solid intellectual grounding in Catholic teaching. Classes encourage reflection, dialogue, and critical thinking rooted in faith.
Spiritual & Community Life
Formation extends beyond the classroom. Students actively participate in prayer, liturgical celebrations, and community engagement, nurturing personal holiness and a deeper relationship with Christ.

St. John Paul II Institute of Theology
Our History
The St. John Paul II Institute of Theology (JOPASIT), Buea, was born from a vision inspired in 2007 following the installation of Bishop Immanuel Bushu as Bishop of Buea. During a discussion after the installation Mass, the need for a theological institute for the lay faithful in the Diocese became evident. At the time, many Christians were traveling to Douala for theological formation. Bishop Bushu expressed his desire that, in the near future, such formation would be available in Buea.
In March 2007, an Advisory Board was established to study and implement this vision, grounded in Canon 217 of the Church, which affirms the right of every baptized person to Catholic formation. The Institute was formally inaugurated on 29th September 2007, under the patronage of St. John Paul II, with the motto “Veritatis Splendor” — Truth in All Its Splendour.
Classes began in October 2007 with 76 pioneer students, and on 29th December 2007, the foundation stone was laid on land donated in Molyko. Since then, JOPASIT has grown steadily, forming generations of mature Christians committed to faith, truth, and service in the Diocese of Buea and beyond.
